At KOKET, we love incorporating bold, rare, and sumptuous materials into our couture pieces. Now, we are turning our attention to the ever-luminous art of straw marquetry, unveiling a series of furniture and lighting designs destined to delight the eye.
The craft of marquetry, the inlaying of small pieces of variously colored wood (another KOKET favorite) or other materials, such as metal, glass, stone, and our newest love—straw, dates back to ancient times. In 17th-century Europe, straw marquetry began to really showcase its design potential with creators applying it as a decorative finish for home decor.
The process of creating straw marquetry begins with wheat or oat straw, carefully split, soaked, and ironed to create thin, glossy ribbons. Occasionally dyed, these ribbons are then meticulously applied, piece by piece. Patterns are often geometric or organic, resulting in an exquisite finish. This technique requires precision and a deep understanding of light, texture, and form. The result is a finish that shimmers with luxury and elevation.
In honor of the art of straw marquetry, our Founder, Janet Morais, and Creative Director, Sofia Silva, along with the rest of our creative team, designed a series of furniture and lighting pieces featuring striking straw finishes. Developing this collection was a joy! The team worked with such talented craftspeople, and straw is such a unique and precious material. Straw marquetry is a timeless and delicate art form we are thrilled to showcase in our list of finishes.

At the heart of our new line are two sets of armoires and cabinets—the Celine and Sahara. The Celine Armoire and Cabinet are sleek and nothing short of spectacular.
