Every design begins with a feeling. For Spellbound, KOKET’s signature floral furniture collection, that feeling is enchantment\u2014the particular, irresistible pull of something so beautiful it seems to cast a spell on the room around it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a feeling that The Story Behind the Design series<\/a> keeps returning to: an ongoing look at the ideas, inspirations, and artistry behind KOKET’s most iconic creations, one story at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Few designs wear that enchantment as literally\u2014or as beautifully\u2014as Spellbound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where It Began: A Clutch, a Photograph, a Spark<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Every KOKET design begins with a feeling, but Spellbound began with an image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2013, KOKET founder Janet Morais came across a still life photograph by David Prince<\/a>, styled by Craig Montague<\/a>, featuring an Alexander McQueen clutch<\/a>. It could have been a fleeting glance\u2014a fashion photograph in a print magazine, seen once, filed away. Instead, it stopped her. She ripped it out and pinned it to her inspiration board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is, in many ways, the truest expression of how KOKET designs. The brand has always found its muse in fashion first. In the cut of a gown, the architecture of a heel, the audacity of an accessory built to be noticed. KOKET furniture comes to life very much like the way haute couture does \u2014piece by piece, detail by detail, with the same reverence for craft. KOKET pieces are jewelry for the home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That single clutch, caught in a single photograph, became the seed of an entire floral furniture collection. What emerged from it was a piece unlike anything we had made before. A cabinet that looked as though it had been dressed rather than built. Its doors adorned in a delicate lace of hand-sculpted flowers.<\/p>\n\n\n

The Design Story: Reveal and Conceal<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

At the center of Spellbound’s identity is a single, seductive idea: reveal and conceal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beneath every Spellbound piece lies a chest in high-gloss lacquer, feather, or aged mirror. Over it, KOKET lays a lace of sculptural flowers, sandcast in aged brass using techniques as old as metalworking itself. The blooms don’t cover the piece so much as adorn it. An organic hardware that reveals a mesmerizing hint of what lies beneath, the way a veil suggests rather than hides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a distinctly KOKET instinct. A devotion to nature, and to the feminine flower as one of design’s most enduring motifs. Where other brands might treat floral furniture detailing as ornament, KOKET treats it as architecture. Open a Spellbound piece, and the story continues inside. Organic hardware embellishes the drawers, finished to match the exterior. A detail easy to overlook and impossible to forget once you’ve noticed it. Nothing about Spellbound is decorative for decoration’s sake. Every flower, every hinge, every hand-finished edge is part of a single, continuous idea. An idea that a piece of furniture can hold the same tension as a couture gown. A spot somewhere between structure and softness, discipline and allure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is haute couture furniture, rendered in lacquer and brass instead of silk and thread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Handcrafted: The Ancient Art of the Sandcast Flower<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Spellbound’s signature flowers are not stamped, not molded from a template, not mass-produced. They are sandcast\u2014an ancient metalworking technique, in use for centuries. A process in which molten metal is poured into a sand mold to capture every detail of the original sculpted form. It is a slow, exacting process, and one that leaves each flower with the faint, singular imperfections of something made by hand rather than machine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The blooms are most often in aged brass, though KOKET offers them across its full range of metal finishes. Layered over the brass, the lacquer beneath can be any color a client desires. Or a feathered finish from KOKET’s own textile collection\u2014an in-house library of plumage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The result is a piece built the way a couture garment is built: from raw material into something considered, layered, and entirely bespoke. A single “as shown” configuration might combine black high-gloss lacquer across the structure, purple feathers from the KOKET Textiles collection on the door fronts, aged brass on the base and handles, aged gold leaf on the frame, and a lacquered-and-smoked-glass interior\u2014each finish chosen individually, the way a stylist might choose each piece of an outfit. No two clients dress their Spellbound the same way twice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From One Cabinet to a Floral Furniture Collection: A Decade of Bloom<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Spellbound’s story began with a single cabinet, first a concept then a real-life work of art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ahead of its world debut at Salone del Mobile in 2014<\/a>, KOKET previewed the design as a digital prototype\u2014an early glimpse of a floral motif slightly different from the one the collection wears today, offered to build anticipation before the piece ever touched a showroom floor. When the cabinet finally arrived in Milan, it did so in a striking blue lacquer, its sandcast flowers in full bloom across the doors, immediately setting it apart on a floor full of furniture that had nothing quite like it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
